Flash Forward Incubator 2021

‘Still Life’

What does it mean for life to be still? What happens when we look at the same space, the same objects, and the same people every day and for extended periods of time? Do things continue to look and feel the same? Or, are there shapes, patterns, textures, colours or narratives that emerge, or that we begin to imagine are there? How has stillness impacted your life this year?  What continued? What changed? Where are you now? Where do you want to be?

Participants from across the country reflected on the theme and the questions posed above. With individualized mentorship, artist-led workshops, portfolio reviews and online presentations; participants were supported in developing the skills needed for success. Their projects are well executed, delve into the genre, and examine considerable possibilities of the theme. As a collection, they share a wide array of voices, interests, concerns and celebrations from our youth across Canada this year.

While offering a straightforward genre of photography to explore and successfully carry out in the comfort of home,  it simultaneously opened up possibilities to reflect on personal experiences of the Coronavirus Pandemic and the juxtaposing narratives that emerged over the course of the year.
