Sukhumi, Abkhazia - Sep 30, 2008: The women of the ministry of defense march in their 15th anniversary independence parade. By Jason Andrew, Flash Forward 2010.
The Magenta Foundation's inaugural Flash Forward Festival took place from October 6-10, 2010, in Toronto's Liberty Village. A new and ambitious component of the firmly established six-year old annual Flash Forward competition for emerging photographers from Canada, the US and the UK, the successful five-day festival offered programming that included open galleries, lectures, panel discussions, public art installations, special receptions and nightly parties.
A desirable audience of respected local and international industry professionals, as well as young arts professionals, academics, and corporate patrons, attended the festival. The popular daytime lectures and panel discussions were standing-room-only events, indicating the necessity and enthusiasm for this kind of programming aimed at emerging artists. Thanks to all our many followers and supporters of this program for making our inaugural festival such a success.
Today, The Magenta Foundation is pleased to announce Flash Forward Festival Boston, taking place June 2-5, 2011. This new satellite Flash Forward event will feature some of the highlights of the Toronto Festival, including Stephen Mayes' Restructuring the Photographic Practice and Susan Bright's Auto Focus: The Self Portrait in Contemporary Photography.
As well, many new guest speakers will be appearing in Boston along with a new exhibition of emerging photographers from the Boston area, curated by Paula Tognarelli, Executive Director of the Griffin Museum of Photography, and George Slade, Program Manager/Curator at Photographic Resource Centre at Boston University.
